Tybee Island in Winter: What to Do in the Off-Season (2026-27)

By Best of Savannah

Tybee Island in winter is a different trip than Tybee in July. The short answer: from November through February, come for quiet beach walks, the lighthouse, Fort Pulaski, dolphin cruises, and seafood without the summer crowds, but not for swimming. The ocean is too cold for most people, some businesses trim their hours, and a jacket belongs in the car.

Event dates, admission prices, and parking details below were checked against official sites and local news on October 27, 2026. Winter schedules change often on a small island, so confirm hours before you drive out.

TL;DR: Tybee Island in Winter

  • Best for: long beach walks, sunrise at the pier, birding, history, and slow seafood lunches.
  • Not for: swimming or sunbathing. The water is cold enough that most visitors stay out of it.
  • Top stops: the Tybee Island Light Station, Fort Pulaski on the way in, and a dolphin cruise on a calm, sunny day.
  • Holiday events: last winter brought a December Christmas Parade of Lights, a holiday market, New Year's fireworks, and the Polar Plunge on January 1.
  • Parking: the city cut hourly rates last off-season. Check whether the discount returns for 2026-27.
  • Plan around closures: the lighthouse and the Marine Science Center both list Tuesday as a closed day.

Is Tybee Island Worth Visiting in Winter?

Yes, if you want the island without the crowds. Summer Tybee means traffic on US-80, full parking lots, and towels shoulder to shoulder near the pier. In winter you can often walk a long stretch of sand and see only a few dog walkers and shell hunters.

The tradeoffs are real. Beach days depend on the weather, a north wind off the water can feel much colder than the forecast suggests, and some shops and restaurants shorten their hours or close on slow weekdays. Treat winter Tybee as a half-day or overnight escape built around the outdoors and good food, not a classic beach vacation.

If you are planning a wider trip, our Savannah in winter guide covers the city side of the season and when to visit.

Can You Swim at Tybee in Winter?

Technically yes, but almost nobody does. The Atlantic off Georgia cools down sharply after fall, and winter water is far too cold for comfortable swimming. The exception is the Polar Plunge on New Year's Day, when the whole point is a quick, freezing dash into the surf.

The beach itself is still worth the trip. Winter light is soft, sunrise at the pier is quiet, and low tide leaves wide, firm sand for walking.

What Is There to Do on Tybee Island in Winter?

Climb the Tybee Island Light Station

The lighthouse is open year-round, and a cool, clear day is the most comfortable time to climb it. The Tybee Island Light Station's own site lists hours of 9am to 4:30pm on Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, closed Tuesdays, with adult admission of $14 and tickets sold only on site. It also closes on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day, and sells its last tickets around noon on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The ticket also covers the Tybee Museum across the road. Our Tybee Island Lighthouse guide has the full visit plan.

Stop at Fort Pulaski on the way in

Fort Pulaski National Monument sits just off US-80 on Cockspur Island, right before you reach Tybee. Its grounds and trails are a good winter walk, and the fort's brick casemates block the wind. Recreation.gov lists the grounds as open 9am to 5pm, with the fort itself closing at 4:30pm, and an entrance fee for visitors 16 and older. See our Fort Pulaski guide before you go.

Take a dolphin cruise

Bottlenose dolphins live in the waters around Tybee year-round, and winter boats tend to be far less crowded than summer ones. Schedules thin out in the off-season and trips can be canceled for wind, so book a day ahead and pick a calm afternoon. Local operators in our directory include Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventure and Dolphin Magic Tours. Compare them in our Tybee dolphin tours guide.

Paddle on a mild day

Kayaking in winter works on warm, still days if you dress in layers you do not mind getting wet. Guided outfitters such as Sea Kayak Georgia know which creeks stay sheltered. Ask each outfitter about cold-weather gear and minimum temperatures before you book.

Visit the Marine Science Center

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center at North Beach is a good indoor stop when the wind picks up. Its website lists Wednesday through Monday hours, closed Tuesdays, but older listings show shorter winter hours, so call ahead before planning a visit around it.

What Events Happen on Tybee in Winter?

The island has a small, local holiday season. According to WTOC, last winter's lineup included a Christmas Parade of Lights on December 12, a holiday market the next day, New Year's Eve fireworks at midnight, and the Polar Plunge at noon on January 1. The 2026-27 dates had not been posted when we checked, so watch the City of Tybee Island's event calendar.

The Tybee Polar Plunge is the big one. WTOC reported thousands of people at the 26th annual plunge on January 1, 2026. It raises money for the Tybee Post Theater, so check the theater's website for 2027 registration once it opens. If you are staying in town for the holidays, pair it with our Savannah New Year's Eve guide.

Local tip: go to the Polar Plunge even if you have no plans to get wet. The crowd and the beach scene near the pier are half the fun, and you can watch from the sand with a coffee in hand.

Is Parking Cheaper on Tybee in Winter?

It was last season. WTOC reported in November 2025 that the city cut its hourly rate from $4 to $2 from November 1 through February 28. A month later the city added free parking through New Year's Day as part of a winter incentive push. Both programs covered the 2025-26 winter, and we could not confirm that they will return for 2026-27.

Payment is by kiosk or the Park TYB app, and the city no longer takes cash at meters. Check the City of Tybee Island's parking services page before you go.

Where Should You Eat on Tybee in the Off-Season?

Cool weather is oyster season on the Georgia coast, and that alone is a reason to drive out. Our Savannah oysters guide explains the season and where to find local oysters, and our best restaurants on Tybee Island guide covers the island's go-to seafood spots.

Outdoor decks are less appealing on a windy day, and some places close early or skip a weekday in winter. Call ahead, eat a little earlier than you would in summer.

Should You Stay on Tybee in Winter?

An overnight stay is when winter Tybee shines. You get sunrise at the pier, a quiet evening, and an empty beach the next morning, often at lower rates than in summer. Our Tybee Island beachfront hotels guide compares the oceanfront options, and the Tybee vs Savannah where-to-stay guide helps if you are splitting time with the city.

What Should You Pack for Tybee in Winter?

  • A windproof layer: a breeze off the water can make the beach feel colder than downtown Savannah.
  • Closed-toe shoes: for the lighthouse stairs, Fort Pulaski trails, and cold sand.
  • Binoculars: winter brings shorebirds to the beach and marsh, and the dolphin boats are easier to enjoy with them.
  • A dog leash: if you are bringing a pet, read our Savannah with dogs guide and check Tybee's current beach rules first.

Bottom Line

Tybee Island in winter is a quiet, low-key trip. Skip the swimsuit, bring a jacket, and build the day around the lighthouse, Fort Pulaski, a dolphin cruise on a calm afternoon, and a long seafood lunch. Avoid planning around Tuesdays, confirm hours before you go, and check whether the off-season parking discount is back.
