Savannah New Year's Eve 2026: Fireworks, Parties & Where to Watch

By Best of Savannah

Savannah New Year's Eve centers on one free event: a midnight fireworks show launched from a barge on the Savannah River, visible along River Street. The short answer: pick your spot on the riverfront by 11 PM, or book a rooftop party, riverboat cruise, or hotel package early if you want a guaranteed view. If you'd rather celebrate at the beach, Tybee Island has its own midnight fireworks off the pier.

TL;DR: New Year's Eve in Savannah

  • Main event: free midnight fireworks over the Savannah River, about 10 minutes long in recent years.
  • Where to watch: anywhere along River Street from Plant Riverside District to Eastern Wharf. Rousakis Riverfront Plaza is the classic spot.
  • Book early: rooftop parties, riverboat cruises, and prix fixe dinners sell out in December.
  • Beach option: Tybee Island fireworks at midnight from the Tybee Pier and Pavilion.
  • 2026 details: as of early October, organizers hadn't announced this year's schedule. The plans below are based on recent years, so confirm closer to the date.

When and Where Are the New Year's Eve Fireworks?

The fireworks start at midnight on December 31. For the 2025 show, WTOC reported that the barge was positioned in the river in front of the Savannah Convention Center. It typically shows up between 11:15 and 11:30 PM, and the display ran about 10 minutes.

The show is visible along the whole length of River Street, from Plant Riverside District on the west end to Eastern Wharf on the east. Savannah's Waterfront, the River Street business group, coordinates the evening, and in past years businesses along the river have added live music and food and drink specials before midnight.

Savannah hasn't posted its 2026 plans yet. Check riverstreetsavannah.com in December for the barge location, start time, and any street changes.

What Are the Best Spots to Watch?

You don't need a ticket to see the fireworks. These are the most popular free viewing areas:

  • Rousakis Riverfront Plaza: the central stretch of River Street, with open space and a straight view across the water. It's also the most crowded.
  • Near Plant Riverside District: the west end of River Street, with bars and restaurants steps away. Our Plant Riverside District guide covers the venues there.
  • Eastern Wharf: the newer east end of the riverfront, often a little calmer than the middle of River Street.

Get there by 11 PM if you want a spot at the railing. River Street's cobblestones and ramps are steep in places, so wear flat shoes.

Where Are the Best New Year's Eve Parties?

Ticketed parties give you a guaranteed view, a midnight toast, and a place to stay warm. Venues change their themes and prices every year, but these have hosted parties in recent years, according to WTOC and Visit Savannah:

  • Peregrin at Perry Lane Hotel: rooftop party with live music and a midnight toast. The hotel has also held a ticketed masquerade.
  • Plant Riverside District: Electric Moon's decade-themed party, the Myrtle & Rose rooftop bar party, and Stone & Webster Chophouse's prix fixe dinner with a fireworks viewing area. The district sits on the river next to the JW Marriott Plant Riverside.
  • Kimpton Brice Hotel: a 1920s-themed party in past years.
  • River Street bars: many hold their own countdown parties with no ticket required.

Rooftops are the best view in town on fireworks night. Our rooftop bars guide covers which ones face the river. Expect cover charges or tickets, and check each venue's site in December for 2026 details.

Can You Watch the Fireworks From a Boat?

Yes. In past years, Savannah Riverboat Cruises has offered three New Year's Eve options, according to WTOC and Visit Savannah: an early dinner cruise for families, a late adults-only party cruise, and a formal gala cruise. The late cruises ran past midnight to catch the fireworks from the water.

The riverboats board at 9 E. River St. As of early October, the company hadn't posted 2026 New Year's Eve cruises. Check savannahriverboat.com or call 912-232-6404, and book early, since these are some of the first New Year's Eve tickets to sell out. Our riverboat cruise guide explains the regular cruise options.

Local tip: Have dinner at 6 or 7 PM, then head to the river. Restaurants near River Street book up for the 8-10 PM window on New Year's Eve. An early dinner in the squares, followed by a walk north to the riverfront by 11, avoids both the reservation crunch and the scramble for a viewing spot.

Can You Drink on River Street on New Year's Eve?

Savannah's usual to-go cup rules apply. In the Historic District, you can carry one open drink in a plastic or paper cup of 16 ounces or less. Glass, cans, and bottles aren't allowed on the street. Our to-go cup guide has the full rules and boundaries.

Savannah police have warned ahead of recent New Year's Eves that celebratory gunfire is dangerous and can lead to citations or arrests. Walk back with your group, and stick to busy, lit streets late at night.

Is There Anything Family-Friendly on New Year's Eve?

Yes. The fireworks are free and open to everyone, but midnight on a packed River Street is a lot for small kids. Families have a few other options:

  • The early riverboat dinner cruise, if it runs again in 2026.
  • Free family events near the riverfront. In 2025, WTOC reported free family activities and live music at MLK Jr. Park.
  • The Savannah Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District runs through January 3, 2027.

What About Tybee Island on New Year's Eve?

Tybee Island holds its own midnight fireworks from the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. In past years it's been free and open to the public, with people watching from the pier and the beach around it. Parking near the pier is limited, so plan to arrive early, and don't bring your own fireworks.

The next morning, Tybee hosts its Polar Plunge on New Year's Day. WTOC covered the 26th annual plunge on January 1, 2026, which drew thousands into the ocean. The event benefits the Tybee Post Theater. Check tybeeposttheater.org for 2027 registration. Our Tybee Island day trip guide covers getting there.

Where Should You Stay for New Year's Eve?

Stay within walking distance of River Street so you don't have to drive or wait for a ride after midnight. Riverfront and Historic District hotels charge more around New Year's Eve, so book early. Browse our Savannah hotels directory, or compare areas in our where-to-stay neighborhood guide.

If you're driving in for the evening, park early and plan to stay put until the crowds thin. Our guide to parking in the Historic District lists the garages closest to the river.

What Is the Weather Like on New Year's Eve?

Late December in Savannah is usually mild by national standards, but it gets chilly by the river at midnight. Bring layers and a jacket that blocks wind. Our Savannah in winter guide covers the season's weather and packing.

Bottom Line

New Year's Eve in Savannah comes down to one free, 10-minute fireworks show over the river and the parties around it. If you want to see it for free, get to River Street by 11 PM. If you want a guaranteed view and a warm spot, book a rooftop party, riverboat cruise, or Plant Riverside ticket in early December. Check the 2026 details with each venue once they're posted.
