Savannah in January: Weather, Events & What to Expect (2027)

By Best of Savannah

Savannah in January is the city at its quietest, and for many travelers that is the whole appeal. The short answer: expect highs around 60°F, nights near 40°F, thin crowds, and some of the lowest hotel rates of the year. The calendar is light but has two anchors: the Tybee Polar Plunge on New Year's Day and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade on Monday, January 18, 2027.

Below is what the weather is really like, what is happening, what to pack, and how to get the most out of a slow month. If you are still deciding between months, our best time to visit Savannah guide compares the whole year.

TL;DR: Savannah in January

  • Weather: typical highs near 60°F and lows near 39-40°F, with cold snaps that can dip lower and warm spells in the high 60s.
  • Prices: January is usually Savannah's cheapest month for hotels, especially midweek.
  • January 1: the Tybee Polar Plunge, a long-running New Year's Day tradition that benefits the Tybee Post Theater.
  • January 1-3: the last days of the free Savannah Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District, which closes January 3, 2027.
  • January 18: the MLK Day Parade steps off downtown at 10 a.m.
  • Best for: walking the squares, museums, oysters, and ghost tours without the spring crowds.

What Is the Weather Like in Savannah in January?

January is Savannah's coldest month, but cold is relative. NOAA-based daily averages put typical mid-January highs around 59-61°F and lows around 38-40°F. Most afternoons are pleasant for walking in a light jacket.

The catch is how much it swings. A sunny 68°F afternoon can be followed by a windy day that never leaves the 40s. Mornings on clear nights can bring frost, and a hard freeze happens in some winters. Snow is rare enough to make the local news when it falls.

Rain comes and goes, usually as passing fronts rather than all-day storms. Build a flexible plan with a few indoor options for the wet days.

What Events Happen in Savannah in January?

Tybee Polar Plunge (January 1)

Tybee Island starts the year by running into the Atlantic. WTOC reported that thousands took part in the 26th annual plunge on January 1, 2026, and proceeds support the Tybee Post Theater. Recent editions have added a costume contest and a parade before the swim. Check tybeeposttheater.org for the 2027 time, registration, and meeting spot, since the gathering point has moved in past years. Our Tybee Island day trip guide covers the drive and parking.

Last Days of the Savannah Christmas Market (Through January 3)

The free Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District runs through January 3, 2027, so early-January visitors can still catch the holiday lights and vendor stalls on the west end of the riverfront.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade (January 18)

Savannah's MLK Day Parade is one of the largest in the country for the holiday. The 2027 parade is set for Monday, January 18, at 10 a.m., organized by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance Day Association, according to WTOC. The 2026 parade, the 48th, drew around 300 units through the Historic District. The 2027 route had not been posted when we checked, so look for it on mlkingsavannah.com in January.

The holiday weekend is a good time to explore the city's civil rights history. Start with the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum.

Ghost Pirates Hockey

The Savannah Ghost Pirates play ECHL hockey at Enmarket Arena through the winter, and a home game is one of the easiest nights out in January. Dates have shifted this season, so confirm the current schedule on the team's site. Our Ghost Pirates game guide covers tickets, parking, and the shuttle.

Restaurant Week Kicks Off Late in the Month

Savannah's restaurant week, now called Hostess City Eats, ran from January 28 through February 8 in 2026. The 2027 dates and participating restaurants had not been announced when we checked, so watch eatitandlikeit.com if your trip lands at the end of the month.

Is January a Cheap Time to Visit Savannah?

Usually, yes. After New Year's weekend, demand drops and January becomes the low point of the year for hotel rates. Midweek stays tend to be the best value. Holiday weekends, like MLK weekend, and big group events can still push rates up, so compare prices for your exact dates.

January is a good month to book a hotel you might skip in April. Downtown picks like the Perry Lane Hotel, the Kimpton Brice, and the JW Marriott Plant Riverside put you within walking distance of the squares. Compare more options in our best Historic District hotels guide.

What Are the Best Things to Do in Savannah in January?

  • Walk the squares: cool, dry afternoons are ideal for a self-guided loop. Start with our guide to Savannah's squares.
  • Spend a morning in museums: January's cold or rainy days are made for the city's museums. See our Savannah museums guide.
  • Eat oysters: cool months are classic local oyster season. Our Savannah oysters guide breaks down where to go.
  • Take a ghost tour: early sunsets mean evening tours start in full dark. Compare options in our ghost tours directory to see what each one offers.
  • Visit Bonaventure: bare winter light suits the oak alleys and old monuments. Allow a couple of hours to wander.
  • Try a walking tour: the city is easy to cover on foot when it isn't hot. Pick a guided tour or map your own route.
Local tip: Plan outdoor sightseeing for midday. A January morning that starts in the high 30s can reach the 60s by 2 p.m., and the squares feel completely different in the afternoon sun. Save museums, long lunches, and shopping for the chilly mornings and evenings.

What Should You Pack for Savannah in January?

  • Layers: a T-shirt or light long sleeve, a sweater, and a real jacket for nights.
  • A rain shell or umbrella: fronts move through quickly.
  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes: brick sidewalks and cobblestones on River Street get slick when wet.
  • Something warmer for Tybee: the wind off the ocean makes the beach feel much colder than downtown.

Our full what to pack for Savannah list covers every season.

How Is January Different From the Rest of Winter?

December is all about holiday events, lights, and busier weekends. February brings warmer afternoons and the start of festival season, covered in our Savannah in February guide. January sits in between: the fewest events, the coldest nights, and the quietest streets. If you want holiday lights, read our Savannah in December guide. For the full December-to-February picture, see Savannah in winter.

Bottom Line

Savannah in January trades big events for calm streets, mild afternoons, and the lowest hotel rates of the year. Come for New Year's Day and the Polar Plunge, MLK weekend and the January 18 parade, or a quiet midweek escape. Pack layers, plan outdoor time for midday, and confirm event times and the Ghost Pirates schedule closer to your trip, since details can change.
