Savannah vs Hilton Head: Which Is Better for Your Trip?

By Best of Savannah

Savannah vs Hilton Head is really a choice between a historic city and a beach resort island. The short answer: choose Savannah if you want history, restaurants, walkable streets, and things to do after dark. Choose Hilton Head if you want a beach vacation built around sand, golf, bikes, and slow days by the pool. They sit roughly 40 miles apart, about 45 minutes to an hour by car, so plenty of travelers base in one and day-trip to the other.

Below is an honest comparison by trip type, with the details that actually decide it: beaches, food, getting around, cost, and timing.

TL;DR: Savannah or Hilton Head?

  • Pick Savannah for: history, architecture, the 22 squares, ghost tours, food tours, restaurants, and a walkable downtown with nightlife.
  • Pick Hilton Head for: a true beach vacation, resort golf, flat bike paths, and quiet family time.
  • Beach access: Savannah's beach is Tybee Island, about 20 minutes away. On Hilton Head you can stay steps from the sand.
  • Getting around: you can skip a car in Savannah's Historic District. On Hilton Head, plan on a car or bikes.
  • Can't decide? Stay in Savannah and day-trip to Hilton Head, or the reverse. Both use Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV).

What Is the Main Difference Between Savannah and Hilton Head?

Savannah is a city. Its Historic District is a grid of squares, oak-shaded streets, house museums, and restaurants, and the fun comes from walking it. Our Savannah squares guide shows how the layout works.

Hilton Head is a resort island in South Carolina. Most of it is organized into planned communities and "plantations" with golf courses, villas, and private roads. Days revolve around the beach, the pool, a round of golf, and dinner. It is less about sightseeing and more about switching off.

Neither is better in general. The question is which kind of trip you want.

Which Is Better for Beaches?

Hilton Head wins, and it is not close. The island has roughly 12 miles of Atlantic beach, with wide, hard-packed sand that is good for walking and biking at low tide. Many hotels and rentals sit right on it.

The town runs several public beach parks, including Coligny Beach Park near the south end, which is the easiest choice for day visitors. The town has charged for parking at most other beach access lots, and Coligny's rules have been under review, so check the Town of Hilton Head Island's site for current parking before you go.

Savannah has no beach of its own. Its beach is Tybee Island, about 20 minutes east on US-80. Tybee is more casual and less polished than Hilton Head, and it makes an easy half-day. See our Savannah beach guide and Tybee day trip guide for the details.

Which Is Better for History and Sightseeing?

Savannah, easily. The city's Historic District packs museums, churches, cemeteries, and historic homes into a small area you can cover on foot. Guided options run from walking and trolley tours to the ghost tours Savannah is known for. Start with our best walking tours in Savannah guide or browse the Savannah ghost tours directory.

Hilton Head has some history and culture, including Gullah heritage sites and the Coastal Discovery Museum, but most visitors do not come for sightseeing. The best-known landmark is the red-and-white striped Harbour Town Lighthouse in Sea Pines, which you can climb for a fee.

Which Has Better Food?

Savannah has the deeper restaurant scene. You can eat Southern classics, fine dining, seafood on the river, and casual spots all within walking distance. Book ahead at places like The Grey or The Olde Pink House, or try a guided tasting through our Savannah food tours directory.

Hilton Head's dining leans toward seafood, waterfront decks, and resort restaurants, which suits a beach trip well. It is spread out, though, so most meals mean a drive or a bike ride. If food is a big part of your trip, Savannah is the stronger base. Browse the full Savannah restaurants directory to plan.

Which Is Better for Golf?

Hilton Head. The island has a couple of dozen golf courses, many of them resort courses open to guests and outside players. Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines hosts the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage each April. The PGA Tour lists the 2027 tournament for April 15-18, and island lodging fills up and prices rise that week.

Savannah has solid public courses that suit a round or two on a city trip. Our best golf courses in Savannah guide covers where visitors can play, and when Hilton Head is worth the drive.

Which Is Better for Families?

Hilton Head is the easier family vacation. Kids get the beach, the pool, and miles of flat paved paths to bike, and parents get a slower pace. Renting bikes for the week is a classic Hilton Head move.

Savannah works well for families with school-age kids and teens who enjoy history, ghost stories, and boat rides. Our Savannah with kids guide lists family activities that stay on budget.

Local tip: If you day-trip to Hilton Head, plan around the Sea Pines gate. Harbour Town and its lighthouse sit inside Sea Pines, a gated community that charges outside visitors a daily per-car gate fee, payable at the entry house. It has been $9 in cash, but confirm the current fee and payment rules with Sea Pines before you go. Leave Savannah early too: summer traffic on US-278 onto the island can add a lot of time to the drive.

Do You Need a Car in Savannah or Hilton Head?

In Savannah, not if you stay in or near the Historic District. It is compact, and walking, the free DOT shuttle, and rideshare cover most of it. Our walkability guide explains when a car helps and when it is a parking headache.

On Hilton Head, you will want a car to get to the island and to reach restaurants and shopping spread across it. Once you settle in, bikes handle a lot of short trips. If you fly in, SAV is the closest major airport to both, and our airport to downtown guide covers the Savannah side.

Which Is Cheaper?

It depends on how you travel. Hilton Head tends to work best as a week-long stay in a condo or villa, which can be good value for a large group or family. Savannah suits shorter trips, and you can save by skipping a rental car.

Prices on both sides spike around big events. In Savannah, St. Patrick's Day weekend is the biggest crunch. On Hilton Head, it is RBC Heritage week and the summer beach season. Compare dates before you commit.

Where Should You Stay?

In Savannah, stay in or near the Historic District so you can walk everywhere. For a splurge, look at Perry Lane Hotel, Mansion on Forsyth Park, or JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District, or compare more in our best Historic District hotels guide.

On Hilton Head, decide first whether you want to be on the beach, inside a resort community like Sea Pines, or near Coligny for restaurants and shops. Want a beach base closer to Savannah instead? Our Tybee vs Savannah where-to-stay guide covers that choice.

Can You Do Both on One Trip?

Yes, and it is a good plan. A common split is two or three nights in Savannah for food and history, then several nights on Hilton Head for the beach. If you only have a long weekend, base in Savannah with our 3-day Savannah itinerary and spend one day on Hilton Head.

Bottom Line

Choose Savannah for history, food, walkable streets, and nightlife. Choose Hilton Head for beaches, golf, bikes, and an easy resort pace. If you want a bit of both, they are close enough to combine: stay in Savannah and day-trip to Hilton Head, or split your nights between them. Whatever you choose, confirm parking, gate fees, and event dates before you go.
